Hello! I’m Bêne (pronounced Beanie), a Counselling Psychologist passionate about supporting people as they navigate life’s challenges. My approach is grounded in compassion and genuine connection, and I offer a space where every part of you can be met with curiosity, empathy, and care. I value honesty, warmth, and collaboration, and believe that meaningful change often begins in the safety of a real and supportive therapeutic relationship.
Who I Support
I work with adults in individual therapy, as well as with couples seeking to strengthen and deepen their relationships. Many of the individuals I see are navigating anxiety, depression, trauma, grief and loss, burnout, challenges with self-worth, or difficulties in their relationships. Others seek therapy to understand themselves more deeply, process past experiences, and move toward greater balance and authenticity in their lives.
In my work with couples, I support partners across diverse relationship contexts. Many come to therapy feeling disconnected, unheard, or caught in patterns that keep them apart. I help partners slow things down, make sense of their emotional needs, and begin to reach for one another with empathy and care. Together, we focus on creating emotional safety, strengthening communication, and fostering a deeper sense of closeness and connection.
How I Work
I have been trained in various therapeutic modalities, allowing me to develop an integrative approach tailored to each client’s unique needs. My work is primarily person-centred and attachment-based, grounded in the belief that growth happens in the context of a safe and attuned relationship. I also integrate psychodynamic ideas to explore how early experiences shape current patterns and draw on Internal Family Systems (IFS) to help clients connect with the different parts of themselves with curiosity and compassion. I’m trained in Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR) for the treatment of trauma and in Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) for couples. At the heart of my work is a warm, compassionate, and non-judgemental space where we can make sense of what’s been difficult, strengthen what’s already working, and support you in moving toward a more connected and fulfilling life.
Professional Background and Qualifications
I hold a PhD in Psychology, where my research explored disenfranchised grief, and an MA in Counselling Psychology from the University of Johannesburg. My experience spans in-patient, private, academic, and group-practice settings, where I’ve had the privilege of supporting adults facing a wide range of mental health challenges. I continue to be involved in research, supervision, and ongoing learning that deepen and enrich my clinical work.
Beyond the Therapy Room
Outside of my work, I’m a coffee enthusiast and animal lover who feels most at home in nature or when travelling and spending time with loved ones. I love cooking and trying new recipes, especially when sharing them with friends or family. I’m also a regular CrossFitter who values the strength, focus, and sense of community it brings. Life at home is lively and full of heart, thanks to my cats and dogs, who add equal parts warmth, humour, and chaos to every day.
